Development
Since 2003 we have been working towards the improvement of the chapel and its facilities to create the 'Spirituality Centre'.
Phase 1 of these works were completed at the end of 2008. This improved the interior of the Chapel and added extra facilities including lounge and refreshment space, toilets and storage space. The existing vestry/office and meeting rooms have been reconfigured providing oriel windows facing South-East, and enabling better conditions for working and meeting with people. This work has been paid for entirely through a fund-raising campaign.
A second phase of work in the future will add a circular meeting room.
Archbishops Open Whirlow Grange Christian Spirituality Centre
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York opened the Whirlow Grange Christian Spirituality Centre in Sheffield.
The Centre has been developed to provide a place for people to explore prayer and deepen their spiritual life. Following a successful appeal, the first phase of the building work was completed at the end of 2008.
At a service attended by over 100 people, and dedicated. Also taking part in the service were the Bishops of Sheffield and Doncaster. The recently retired Bishop of Sheffield, Jack Nicholls, who had been a strong supporter of the project, was also at the opening.
The Chaplain of Whirlow, Revd Nick Helm, has been involved in developing the centre said: 'We are excited by the possibilities that the new centre affords us. This is a place for people to deepen their spiritual life so that they can be more effective in serving God in their lives, communities and churches.'
In his sermon, the Archbishop of Canterbury talked about the centre being an important place for people to be empty so that they could be filled by God.
In the diocese of Sheffield, the centre provides a place for people to come to explore and deepen prayer and discerning God in life. The programme of events include retreats, quiet days and courses in spirituality and spiritual direction.
